The Girls Rugby Club has today announced a collaboration with leading Allianz Premier 15s club Loughborough Lightning to further strengthen its existing talent pathway and to deliver unique opportunities for young players in the region. Since the inception of the Premier 15s, England’s top tier women’s domestic rugby union competition, in 2017 Loughborough Lightning has maintained strong performances, finishing in the top four in its last two seasons. The side boasts a number of top international players including England Red Roses captain Sarah Hunter and former World Rugby Women’s 15s Player of the Year Emily Scarratt, as well as Scottish and Canadian internationals.

The Girls Rugby Club will manage the delivery of all girls rugby camps in the area in collaboration with Loughborough Lightning, utilising existing coaching staff and star players. The collaboration is hoped to support Lightning to identify and develop local rugby talent and provide a pathway for female players in the region who aspire to play at the highest level.

Loughborough Lightning Director of Rugby, Rhys Edwards says, “The Girls Rugby Club has developed an impressive framework to develop up and coming young female rugby players and one that will provide huge benefit to us as a club. We’re confident that our relationship with the Girls Rugby Club will further strengthen our position within the Allianz Premier 15s and help us to add depth to our talent pathway.”

Girls Rugby Club founder Rachael Burford says, “We’ve always been committed to providing opportunities for young girls playing rugby and part of that is about plugging the gaps in the talent pathway and connecting the dots from grassroots through to the elite level. Our work with Loughborough Lightning is an example of how we can support clubs with their talent identification and development and ensure women’s rugby has a promising future. We remain club agnostic and open to providing the same support in regions throughout the UK.”
